Learn for Life & The Tailoring Project
On my latest trip to India I made a visit to the Learn for Life School in Varanasi. This non-profit organisation aims to give a non-formal education to a group of children from a very poor area. It's a charity school, which provides books, uniforms, food, health check up for children and families for free. They also recently set up a sewing school for disadvantaged local women.
The aim of this is to train up women who wouldn’t be working otherwise, to have the skills that lead them into the world of work and fair employment. In Indian traditional society, tailoring is considered a 'man's job'. So by giving these professional tailoring skills it is truly empowering. I went to visit the women learning to sew, and the children in the school - and was overwhelmed by how friendly everyone was, and obviously very happy to be there.
It was extremely inspiring to see an organisation like this. I knew straight away after visiting and meeting the amazing people that worked there and attended, that I wanted to help out in my own way. So, I will be putting £1 from every sale I make on Balulu towards the Tailoring Project in Varanasi. The money will go towards supporting these women and helping get new equipment and better facilities for them to learn with.
Soon I am also going to be getting an exclusive range of playsuits made by these amazing women, and using materials from Bindaas Unlimited - which are all dyed with natural organic dyes.
So please remember that now with every item you buy, not only will you be getting a beautiful handmade and ethical piece of clothing, you will be supporting disadvantaged women who are learning new skills to sew, and helping them to get into employment and become wonderful seamstresses. Watch this space for more information on this, coming soon.
